Pakistan to shut down BlackBerry services from December

KARACHI: The Pakistani government plans to shut down BlackBerry Ltd's secure messaging services by December 1 for "security reasons", the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority said.

Pakistan, a nuclear-armed nation of 180 million people, is plagued by militancy, criminal gangs and drug traffickers.

"PTA has issued directions to local mobile phone operators to close BlackBerry Enterprise Services from November 30 on security reasons," an official with the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority said in a text message.

He asked not to be named due to the sensitivity of discussing communications and intelligence.

BlackBerry was not immediately available to comment.

A report released this week by British-based watchdog Privacy International said Pakistan's powerful military intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), was seeking to dramatically expand its ability to intercept communications.

BlackBerry encrypts data such as emails and its BlackBerry Messenger messages sent between a user's phone and public networks, ensuring greater privacy for users but making life harder for police and intelligence agencies.

The company has faced similar problems in the past in India, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia.

The Privacy International report said the ISI had few legal checks on their surveillance.

"Pakistan's intelligence agencies have abused their communications surveillance powers, including by spying on opposition politicians and Supreme Court judges. Widespread Internet monitoring and censorship has also been used to target journalists, lawyers and activists," the report said.Pakistan to shut down BlackBerry services from December

Sony India Launches New Bravia Android TV Range Starting Rs. 69,900

Japanese electronics major Sony's India arm on Thursday introduced five new series of smart Bravia TVs and the slimmest LED TV that will run on Google's Android operating system.
The five new series will comprise of new models ranging from 43-inch to 75-inch panels starting at a price of Rs. 69,900. All the TVs run on Android 5.0 Lollipop-based Android TV operating system with Bravia UX user interface on top.
The TV, that Sony claims is the thinnest, will come in the 4K LED format.
"Over 90 percent of Indian consumers use the Android platform for mobile phones and that is why we choose this platform for our new series of TVs," said Sony India's Bravia head Sachin Rai.
All the new TVs will be able to connect to the Google Play store for downloading apps and will also support voice command for searching the Web or within Google Play.
The Japanese firm has also added unique features to the TVs like 'Serial AbTak' for catching up with TV serials. Also, there is Notify Bravia, which is an exclusive app for uninterrupted TV viewing experience by notifying customer about a call, SMS, or email.
Last month, Sony India Managing Director Kenichiro Hibi said the company is "seriously" looking at participating in the government's 'Make in India' initiative and is considering setting up a manufacturing plant in the country. However, he declined to share any information on time frame and investment in the new unit.Sony India Launches New Bravia Android TV Range Starting Rs. 69,900

Windows 10 Build 10240 is the RTM version, but Microsoft wishes you’d stop calling it that

As the Windows 10 ship draws close to port, we’ve seen confirmation from multiple sources that yes, Windows 10 Build 10240 is the RTM version that was sent out to OEMs for installation. The problem with this classification, however, is that Windows 10 Build 10240 is the RTM version, but Microsoft wishes you’d stop calling it thatMicrosoft now refuses to use it. When Mark Hachman of PCWorld reached out to the company for confirmation, he was met with the following: “This build is the latest Windows 10 build, and we’ll continue to update Windows 10 code as we head toward launch and beyond,” a Microsoft spokeswoman said in a statement. “We are embracing a new way to deliver Windows.”Windows 10 Build 10240 is the RTM version, but Microsoft wishes you’d stop calling it that
Far be it for me to contradict Microsoft, but that doesn’t seem to be what’s actually happening. Apple and Google both distribute OS updates over-the-air (well, carriers do). They still launch cohesive branded products around particular codenames. Microsoft is embracing the concept of Windows-as-a-service, but not because other companies that distribute similar products have done so. Instead, this push seems to be more about driving consumers to accept the idea of an ever-evolving, auto-updating software package.
Microsoft has no plans to charge for Windows 10 as a subscription service, but it’s hard to see the company not going down that path at some point. It continues to gain subscribers for its Office 365 system, despite the fact that Office 365 is a terrible value for any single user, costing you as much in one year as the Home version of office typically costs, period (and Office can easily be used on a 5-7 year cycle). The company wouldn’t even need to charge much — $5 per month would likely beat the revenue it got per-user over the long term, especially when combined with OEM sales for new notebook installations.

With Windows licensing revenue falling steadily (OEM licensing was down 22% this quarter while overall revenue in the segment fell by 4%), Microsoft is going to be under pressure to create new methods of extracting value from that market. The company has already said that Windows 10 will be free for its lifetime, and I’m not suggesting anything different, but going forward, I doubt MS simply gives up on Windows revenue. One potential replacement would be revenue from the Windows Store, but that’s dependent on the Windows Store actually offering software that anyone would want to buy.
Returning to the Windows 10 RTM issue, I’d be surprised if the industry stopped using the term. RTM is an understood point at which a product is shipped for installation on a system. Like “gone gold,” it captures a particular moment and is useful for denoting that yes, the OS has been deemed ready and shipped out. Just as motherboard companies still make reference to the BIOS as opposed to the UEFI, it’s not because the term remains accurate — it’s because the term is known and understood by the target audience.
One potential reason for why Microsoft wants to move away from single-number versioning is that it now updates applications separately from the core OS. You might download a new version of Mail or Photos, thereby changing your experience with the device, but still be on the same version number. In the past, Microsoft rarely did this — you had whichever features were installed on your Service Pack or original installation, and the company only occasionally released updates for application-level functionality.

Facebook ordered to hand over 381 users' data to police

Facebook ordered to hand over 381 users' data to policeFacebook Inc cannot challenge search warrants New York prosecutors used to get information from its site on hundreds of users suspected of Social Security fraud, a state appeals court said on Tuesday, in a decision likely making it harder for New Yorkers to keep their digital lives private.

The warrants, which applied to 381 users' photos, private messages and other account information, could only be challenged by individual defendants after prosecutors gathered evidence, the Manhattan-based court unanimously ruled.
Facebook was backed in the case by a group of large internet companies including Google Inc and Microsoft Corp, which argued the case could set a troubling precedent giving prosecutors access to all kinds of digital information.

Internet companies are pushing back broadly against US intelligence and law enforcement agencies' demands for customer data, in the wake of revelations by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden of wide-ranging online surveillance.

The Manhattan District Attorney's office served the warrants on Facebook in 2013, seeking information on dozens of people later indicted for Social Security fraud, including police officers and firefighters who allegedly feigned illness in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

The world's biggest online social network turned the records over to prosecutors last year after a state judge threw out its claim that the warrants violated users' Fourth Amendment rights, but it also went ahead with an appeal.

The court on Tuesday said the only way to challenge warrants was for defendants in criminal cases to move to suppress the evidence they produced.

A Facebook spokesman said the company disagreed with the decision and was considering an appeal.

A spokeswoman for the district attorney's office said prosecutors had secured nearly $25 million from people who were targets in the probe.

"In many cases, evidence on their Facebook accounts directly contradicted the lies the defendants told to the Social Security Administration," she said.

Prosecutors said Facebook pages showed public employees who claimed to be disabled riding jet skis, playing golf and participating in martial arts events.

Mariko Hirose, a lawyer with the New York Civil Liberties Union, which also submitted a brief in support of Facebook, said the court "side-stepped" an important question by ruling on Facebook's right to challenge the warrants and not on their legality.

Moto G (Gen 3) to have 2GB RAM, water-resistance?

NEW DELHI: With the launch of the next generation of Motorola products scheduled for July 28, we are seeing more details of the third-generation Moto G smartphone surface almost every week. Now, two recent reports have shed more light on what we might expect from the Moto G (Gen 3).
Moto G (Gen 3) to have 2GB RAM, water-resistance?
According to import tracking website Zauba, Motorola has imported a total of 192 units of the third-generation Moto G to India for testing purposes. The data by Zauba shows that the upcoming Motorola smartphone will have 2GB of RAM, along with a 5-inch screen, 8GB internal storage, and white and black colour options.

This report contradicts earlier speculation that Moto G (Gen 3) will come with only 1GB RAM, like its predecessors. With 2 gigs of RAM, the smartphone will be better positioned to take on the competition as most smartphones under Rs 15,000 now offer 2GB RAM.

The second report, by technology website Android Syrup, says that Moto G (Gen 3) will be IPX7 certified, meaning it will be not be damaged if submerged under water (up to 1 metre) for half an hour. However, unlike other water-resistant smartphones, it will not be dust-resistant. This feature will help Motorola set the third-gen Moto G apart from the rivals, since no smartphone under Rs 20,000 features water resistance.

Other likely key features of the upcoming Motorola budget smartphone include 5-inch HD (720p) screen, 1.4GHz quad-core 64-bit Snapdragon 410 processor, 8MP or 13MP rear camera with dual-LED flash, 5MP front camera, and 2,470mAh battery.
